Dear KYC families,
Wow! What a fabulous first rehearsal! I am so impressed at the choir’s enthusiasm for singing, and for everyone’s sound contributing to the whole. The sound is full and rich, with great potential for the season!
We started and ended with Bananas, a wonderfully catchy song that has ukulele accompaniment. Its message is simple, fun and truly inclusive uniting ALL cultures in the enjoyment of bananas! I hope you’ll be hearing this song all week!
We also rehearsed our usual sol-fege warm-up patterns with individuals and groups echoing me. . I can already tell we have some very strong leaders in the group, and many kids have some music reading skills already! This year, we will spend less time on the aural (listening) skills, and we will jump more quickly to reading these same patterns on paper. Just like learning English, children need to hear musical phrases before the copy them with their own voices, and before they recognize them written on paper. These are the beginning steps to music reading, which we will work on little bit little all year.
KYC started three additional songs which are Art Thou Troubled, which they learned “by rote” which means “by ear.” Using movement and alternative modernized texts for understanding, the children learned half of the song already! They also began New Year Carol, although they didn’t’ sing any of the words yet, and learned ALL of Haida, a Chassidic song which is beautifully arranged for choir.
At the end of the rehearsal, we sang Bananas again so that we could close the rehearsal with something fun we already knew. I love all the dancing and wiggling we do while we’re singing Bananas, and it will give some children the opportunity to sing by themselves.
Thank you for making drop-off, and especially pick-up so easy! Making music is the most fun part of the day, but logistics are sometimes the most difficult to manage, and families and children all did beautifully.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone next week! Anyone arriving promptly at 3:45 next week will be part of a brief photo shoot so that we can make the homepage of our new website reflect our own GMYC singers! Rehearsal will start promptly at 4pm, and for those involved in Brundibar, we will NOT start rehearsals next week, we will wait until September 20th.
Thanks again, everyone! As always, if you have questions, please email me at email@example.com, or call me at 603-499-3505.
Next year is an extremely special year. It will be Maria Belva's 20th year as the Artistic Director of the Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs. In Spring of 2017, the GMYC will be part of a huge alumni gathering and concert to celebrate Maria's hard work, vision, and accomplishments, and also to celebrate ALL of the singers who have ever been a part of the GMYC. We are expecting hundreds of singers and alumni returning in May 2017 to join her in this celebration. What a special event this will be!
One very special opportunity! We are working toward commissioning a choral piece that all of the members of GMYC and alumni will premier (perform for the first time ever)!!!! This means a song will be written for the GMYC, and everyone in the organization will learn it. We are hoping to premier this special piece at the 20th year anniversary celebration.
