Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs Board of Directors and staff have made the difficult decision to pause all choral activities from July through December 2020. The decision comes after five national choral and singing organizations recommended that no choral singing or choral-related activities take place until we have reliable ways to trace, treat, or vaccinate for Covid-19. “It is hard to imagine a world without singing together,” says Artistic Director Esther Rhoades, “because no matter if you’re 2 or 102, singing and music are central to every one of us.”
 
According to a May 5th webinar hosted by The National Association of Teacher of Singing (NATS), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Chorus America, Barbershop Harmony Society, and Performing Arts Medical Association (PAMA), a singer can project her breath up to 16’, and wearing masks effectively could pose serious risks for any singer, especially those with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
 
“Choral organizations like ours must keep the health of our singers and community at the center of the mission,” says Rhoades. “We want to make sure it’s safe for audiences to gather once again, too.”
 
Even though we will cannot bring choirs together at this time, GMYC will be working behind the scenes so that choirs can hit the ground running to offer exceptional choral opportunities and experiences to our region’s youth and communities. This month, GMYC will make public an important collaborative choral project. GMYC is grateful for the support received from community members and grants from foundations. Rhoades says, “we’re eager to reopen, to press ‘play’ once again, but it just needs more time.”

Like many youth and arts organizations, Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs will close our season remembering impactful moments, people, and experiences instead of the clapping and cheering for the talent and hard work of loved ones, friends, and children of our community.

We remember how each rehearsal gets us closer to the true essence of music: collectively and individually, the music begins to breathe through us as we develop a deeper understanding of reading music, listening while singing, vocal pedagogy, being trusted and trusting others, leading from within, and the inner workings of the composers' intentions. Before we know it, we have surpassed what we ever thought was possible. Explained both by growth mindset and flow theory, collectively we are transformed by our experiences in performance by the music.

Covid-19 has challenged us to seek peace within uncertainty. It's not easy finishing the season without our typical concerts and high fives. We are hungry for musical nourishment. We are seeking our choral communities now more than ever.

There is nothing quite like singing to bring a community together in times of crisis and uncertainty. GMYC is the performance-based choral music education program for young singers in our region. During these times of physical separation, GMYC is dedicated to continue to provide the valuable link to the musical arts for our young people.
 
In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC) is providing meaningful and important ways for young singers to continue to sing together, while apart. GMYC is offering a free music resource for children and adults from anywhere, called GMYC Online. The videos are accessible through the website (www.GrandMonadnockYouthChoirs.org), and provide lessons on
solfege, rhythm, vocal warm-ups, and songs. With over 50 people visiting GMYC Online each day, most families who are accessing the online music education videos live locally, although many families are also using them from around the world.
 
GMYC singers are also recording themselves to create a performance video. Singers also connect together through a video platform each week.
 
GMYC has made the decision to pare down to only core operations, a move designed to be sure the organization remains financially strong and ready to start rehearsals and performances again when it is the right time.

PETERBOROUGH, NH: The Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC) is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Erin Zaffini, DMA to their expanding staff structure. Dr. Zaffini, an adjunct music and music education professor at Keene State College, will be bringing her expertise with young singers to lead the Trebles Choir. Based in Peterborough, the Trebles Choir is comprised of singers in grades two through four. Esther Rhoades, Artistic Director, will continue directing GMYC’s remaining four choirs in Keene and Peterborough: Keene Youth Chorus, Choristers, Elm City Singers, and the Cecilia Ensemble.
 
Dr. Erin Zaffini brings an impressive array of experience to the GMYC team, as she is also a faculty member for the University of New Hampshire’s Professional Development Department, and teaches K-5 general, vocal, and instrumental music at Stoddard and Washington Elementary Schools. Dr. Zaffini is an active clinician around the country, serving as the Eastern Division Representative for NAfME’s General Music Council; is the Collegiate Coordinator, General Music Chair and Mentor Program Coordinator for the New Hampshire Music Educators Association; and sits on the Advisory Committee for the Music Educators Journal.
 
The addition of Dr. Erin Zaffini is one of many substantial changes for this ever-growing organization. In recent years, The Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs expanded their choirs from Peterborough to also serve Keene-area singers and increased the scope of their administrative position in 2019 with plans for greater expansion in 2020, allowing the artistic staff to maximize their creative capabilities with the heart of organization: the singers. Currently serving singers in grades 2-12 from New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts, the organization also plans to expand beyond their five current ensembles.

​Keene, NH: The Ewing Arts Awards were established in 2015 to honor and bring recognition to arts organizations in the Monadnock Region as the late Ruth and James Ewing so passionately did through their stewardship at the Keene Sentinel and involvement with the community. On July 24, hundreds gathered in the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College for the annual awards gala hosted by the Keene Sentinel and Arts Alive! to support the evening’s 16 honorees. 
 
The Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC) were one of four honorees to perform that evening, with singers from all five GMYC ensembles including Keene Youth Chorus, Elm City Singers, Trebles, Choristers, and the Cecilia Ensemble. This special 23-person group performed the Hebrew tet, Al Shloha D’varim by Allan Naplan, whose translation means “The world is sustained by three things: by truth, justice and peace.” Following the performance, GMYC was awarded the Ewing Arts Award in Performing Arts, a category open to, but not limited to, music, musical composition, dance, choreography, and acting and theatre. Artistic Director Esther Rhoades proudly accepted the award on behalf of the organization’s 100 singers, board members, and staff. “We are humbled to accept this prestigious award. I want to make it clear that this award really belongs to the singers, parents, volunteers, founders, board, and staff,” says Rhoades, “It truly takes a village, and I hope that everyone feels recognized by this award. We are part of something larger than ourselves, which is so rewarding; it’s electric!”. 
 
The Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs 2019 – 2020 concert season begins the 2nd week of September, promising many performances from all 5 ensembles throughout the Monadnock Region. Come spring, members of the Cecilia Ensemble will travel to Italy for an international concert tour and the adventure of a lifetime. GMYC proudly provides the opportunity for singers to travel and perform locally and at the high school level, to travel internationally every two years to experience international music, cuisine, develop friendships, and deepen connections.
 
Auditions for the Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs are open to all 2nd-12th grade singers in Central New England. (Keene, NH) On April 12th, members of the Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC) in grades 5-8 will be traveling to New York City for the Choristers and Elm City Singers Ensembles’ first concert tour.  Inspired by the Cecilia Ensemble’s bi-annual international concert tour, the organization felt compelled to offer a performance-based travel opportunity to singers before they enter high school. This inaugural trip to NYC will mark an important milestone in GMYC history, now offering concert tours to all singers in grades 5-8 every other year.
 
GMYC’s first-time New York City itinerary promises a full day of performances, singing workshops, and culturally enriching experiences across Manhattan. Upon arrival in NYC, singers will have their first performance at the Rudolf Steiner School, a Waldorf school in Manhattan serving children Nursery through 12th grade, based on the principle of integrating movement, fine arts, and practical arts into their academic curriculum. GMYC will offer a performance both for the students at the school as well as the general public. At the conclusion of the performance, Rhoades will teach the singers and audience a new song that will be sung together by all.
Following the performance, singers will have time to break for lunch and walk through Central Park just in time to see the infamous cherry trees begin to blossom. This will be the first time exploring New York City for many of the ensembles’ members and offers an exciting opportunity for cultural engagement in a region so unlike many parts of southwestern New Hampshire and its surrounding areas.

Following the walk through Central Park, GMYC singers will attend a private workshop with Francisco J. Nunez, Founder and Artistic Director of the Young Peoples Chorus of New York City. Nunez is a world-renowned children’s choir director and composer who boasts over 125 national and international concerts each year with YPC’s 1,700+ members.

After the workshop, the choirs will participate in an exclusive combined choir rehearsal with YPC’s middle school aged singers. The choirs will perform for each other, exchange gifts, and sing one piece together, led by Nuñez himself.

After the combined rehearsals, singers will experience Times Square, Rockefeller Center, peek into St Patrick’s Cathedral, and have dinner together before returning home.

The Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs is able to offer this music, performance, and culturally based opportunity to Choristers and Elm City Singers through generous donations from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the Putnam Foundation, Douglas Toys, and several private donors. ​Letter to the Editor: Nelson Mandela Celebration

It was with profound respect and delight that the Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC) decided to participate in the global birthday musical celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday!  Each year, the legacy of Mandela is celebrated worldwide on July 18.  We collaborated with the South African Consulate in New York City, who offered personal greetings, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa who agreed to endorse our involvement as a global partner.
 
Nelson Mandela’s message of peace, hope, love for the children of South Africa is the cornerstone of these events around the world.  Mandela is quoted as declaring, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”   His philanthropic will is well established in his post-presidential office with a focus of “liberating children from poverty through improved literacy.”  Since 2011, the Mandela Literacy Project has provided more than 100,000 South African children daily access to reading materials through containerized libraries with an additional 100 000 having access to reading clubs and books. 
 
Here in Keene, we decided to host our event in Central Square.  About 100 people attended to declare their belief in Mandela’s legacy, enjoy a concert by singers from all five GMYC choruses, and conclude the event with a piece of birthday cake! 
 
GMYC’s commitment to young singers has been a driving force of the nonprofit since 1998.  GMYC believes that, today more than ever, our youth need to be educated, respected, supported and loved by the adults in their lives.  As American citizens, we must set an example of right relationship with one another.  By celebrating Nelson Mandela’s birthday in southwestern New Hampshire, we join with millions of others across the globe who hold the same ideals and dreams for all our children.

(Keene NH)   For three weeks in September, Monadnock Region youth will have the opportunity to take the stage and share their singing talent at the 1st annual GMYC Singing Stars! Competition.  The event will be held on Sunday, September 9, 16 & 23 from 3-5pm at The Marlborough House in Marlborough, NH. 
 
This is the first such event for the Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs (GMYC).  As the only nonprofit children’s singing program in the Monadnock Region, GMYC was searching for a fundraiser that fit its mission of encouraging young singers who may be interested in genres other than choral music.
 
Students (public, private and homeschooled) in grades 2-8 are invited to audition on Saturday, August 11 from 11am-1pm, and Thursday, August 16 from 5-7pm at the Waldorf School, 98 South Lincoln Street in Keene.  Registration packets will be available on site; arrive early to complete paperwork.  A non-refundable $25 registration fee can be paid online in advance or at the time of audition.  Performances of up to 90 seconds can either be acapella, or accompanied by a backing track on a phone or CD player (bring your own CD player.)  Experience is not necessary.
 
There are two divisions.  Younger children in grades 2-5 will compete as a Shooting Star, and youth in grades 6-8 will compete as a SuperNova.  Criteria for scoring will be commensurate with age.   Contestant notification will occur no later than Monday, August 20.
 
GMYC Artistic Director, Esther Rhoades, has invited well-known Vocal Instructor Joanne Mead to join her for the audition process.   “We are looking for singers from all genres who would like the experience of performing in front of an audience on stage, cooperating in a group, receiving performance feedback during the event and improving future singing opportunities. We strive to provide a supportive, encouraging environment for burgeoning singers.   Joanne and I both have a depth of experience and can’t wait to hear from interested contestants!”
 
In order to address first-time performers who might be nervous, scores from both Weeks 1 and 2 will be added together when choosing finalist performers from both divisions in the Week 3 finale.  The audience will also be able to vote.  Judges throughout the competition include Laina Barakat, Nicole Colson, Kristen Leach, Matthew McGinnis and Joanne Mead.  Final scores will be tallied and winners will be awarded cash prizes and trophies at the September 23 finale.
 
Professional sound and lighting will be provided by Erik Burke and Aime Theroux, and the event Emcee is local personality, Wade Garrett.  Snacks and drinks will be available.
